What is a chilled beam?

The chilled beam is a room unit for air conditioning systems, usually installed on ceiling, integrating the functions of coo-ling, heating and distribution of primary air. 


The use of a chilled beam system allows to obtain excellent results with regard to comfort, health benefits and energy saving: very low noise levels; high hygiene standards; no unpleasant Room draughts; uniformity of room temperatures.


 High energy efficiency offered by the utilization of low energy input generation for both the cooling and heating media and by the absence of fans on the unit and low distribution pressures. Low maintenance costs and reduction of Installation costs thanks to absence of power connections and condensate drain ducts in the Room.

Air flow direction change by ‘active fins’ without

loss of performance


During factory assembly, the inclination of the fins is set for open flow (shell pattern type A) to ensure the best possible uniformity and velocity of the air flow to the room in standard

conditions.


The flow direction, in the event of layout changes or special requirements, can be quickly and easily modified on site, efficiently solving the problem without loss of performance.


The use of systems to control air diffusion can efficiently overcome the capacity limitations imposed to guarantee no draught risk in the case of installations with parallel chilled beams.

TRIM system for recalibrating the air flow at constant pressure


This is available as an option with variable geometry nozzles that can regulate the air flow rate by operating the two adjusting knobs. 


This regulates the air flow rate directly inside the beam, independently on each of the two air flow inlet ports. Each of the two flows can be modified individually using the relevant adjuster knob, as shown in the picture.


The benefits of this system are:

  • The adjustment system is efficient as it does not introduce any pressure drop or create excessive noise as the pressure change is achieved inside the beam.

  • Variations to room airflow can be achieved in situ.

  • It is possible to independently modify the specific airflow rate of a single airflow inlet port.

Roccheggiani is the first Italian company – and among the first in its sector – to be equipped with a climate chamber, built according to the criteria of the EN 15116 regulation.


Through this department, it is possible to create mock-ups that replicate the thermo-hygrometric conditions of an airconditioned environment, in addition to performing acoustic measurements according to the latest regulations; moreover, air-conditioned environments measuring up to 6x10xH5.2 metres can be replicated with the relative environmental loads. 


These conditions allow for directly experiencing the wellbeing of an environment prior to its actual realisation, while also satisfying any “mock-up” requests characterising large-scale projects. 


Furthermore, Roccheggiani is also equipped with a testing room for testing performances and accurately measuring the vibrations emitted by an operating air handling unit. These tools are essential for developing innovative products and monitoring the relevant performance characteristics.
